Music of the month - May

I haven't discovered a lot of new music this month (hence why there are a few rediscoveries in here) but there's a strange mix, so read below to see what I've been listening to!

blur, the magic whip, lonesome street, martha my dear, the beatles, the white album, nicki minaj, beyonce, the pinkprint, feelin myself, swim deep, one great song and i can change the world, wild belle, isles, album, music

1. Lonesome Street - Blur
I feel like I could put the entire of the new Blur album on here, but I think this is my favourite one. It sounds a little bit like Modern Life is Rubbish era and it's really catchy with some nice harmonies, plus even Liam Gallagher has said it's the best song of 2015.. if an ex-Oasis member is calling a Blur song the best song of 2015, you know it's good.

2. Martha My Dear - The Beatles
This isn't a new song to me but it's one that I always ignored a bit. The White album is an album that I've always thought to be hit and miss, there are some amazing tracks on there and some really crap ones on there (Piggies, for example..) so when I initially ripped songs from the White album to my computer a few years ago, I only ripped the ones I knew really well and Martha My Dear wasn't one of them. However, since then I've gotten a new laptop and a new phone so I had to rip all my music again and I have been listening to the tracks on the White album I ignored before, and Martha My Dear is one of them. The strings, the brass the piano, and the voice of Paul McCartney is just such a beautiful combination and I've been singing this song non-stop for the past month.

3. Feelin Myself - Nicki Minaj ft. Beyonce
Again, not a new song to me, but one I've been listening to constantly with all of the hype of the new video. Nicki Minaj deserves so much more recognition for what she does, she's a POC woman dominating the rap field at the moment (let's not forget Kanye West nearly took her part out of Monster because he thought she'd show everyone else did, then he didn't, and she did) and she does it in a theatrical way, and I think that aspect is lost on a lot of people. Also, need I get started on Beyonce? Me and my friend Isabella (who you may have seen in the various vlogs on my YouTube channel) have been singing this non-stop in the car journeys on the way to school, it's just pretty darn good.

4. One Great Song and I Can Change the World - Swim Deep
Swim Deep are a group who I only got into about a year ago, but I loooove some of their songs, and this new release is no different. It's just super groovy and catchy, it's a bit more upbeat than some of their other songs which are pretty chilled out.

5. Keep You - Wild Belle
I haven't the faintest idea how I came across this song, but I love it so much. It's got that reggae feel about it, I hate to use the word 'vibes' because it sounds so frigging pretentious but it's got those really chilled out summery vibes in it.

What music have you been liking this month?

Recent reads #1

I usually just do single book reviews on this blog but recently I've been loving mini reviews, and there are a lot of books I read that don't get reviewed so from now I'm going to start doing mini reviews instead. I may still do single book reviews if I have a lot to say on a book but for now at least it is bye bye single book reviews, and hello compilation of mini reviews.

Now that that's out of the way...

the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy, breakfast at tiffany's, the great gatsby, eleanor and park, you never give me your money, peter doggett, the beatles, review, book, book review,

ELEANOR AND PARK - RAINBOW ROWELL

★★★★★

Eleanor and Park is the story of a couple of high school losers. Eleanor is the new girl in town with a dysfunctional home life to say the last and she doesn't really have any friends, until she meets Park. Park is a bit of a loser but he does have some friends unlike Eleanor. They sit with each other on the bus and Park lends her comics, and makes her mix tapes, and eventually they become friends, and then they start dating. This is the story of their relationship and how it works despite outside problems.

I got this book for my birthday (I did a post on the things I got here) but I didn't get round to reading it for quite a while clearly. As you can see by the 5 star rating, I loved it (it was good enough to get into my Winter Favourites having only read it a day so y'know). I read about half the book in a day, it was so so easy to read. I mean it's a 'coming-of-age' book so it's hardly going to be complex but I just loved so much about it. I loved the characters, I actually developed a bit of a crush on Park which a bit awkward given that he's a high school student and I'm 18 but hey. It's set in the 80s so they talk about The Smiths and Joy Division a fair bit, and The Beatles even got a few mentions so it's hard to go wrong. The book dealt with big themes like racism, gender roles, body image, and abusive family relationships, and whilst you have to get over the set up that Park and Eleanor basically become really close without really talking to each other, it's so so good and the ending had me so on edge.

YOU NEVER GIVE ME YOUR MONEY: THE BATTLE FOR THE SOUL OF THE BEATLES - PETER DOGGETT

★★★★

This book is the story of The Beatles focusing more on the business side of things, and all the fights that tore them apart as a group. It's tells the tale of how they built up their financial empire at the same time with personal and business rivalry. It  gives you a look into the arguments between the Lennon and McCartney families, the inner conflicts of George Harrison, and Ringo Starr's alcoholism. It documents the changing relationships between the four as they try to dissociate themselves from The Beatles and it shows the transformation of Apple Corps 'from a bastion of 1960s counter-culture into a corporate behemoth'

I got this book for Christmas (I did a post on the things I got here) and I got round to reading it finally because my Dad's been wanting to borrow it off me but he wanted me to read it first and develop my thoughts on it, so that's what I did. This is more about the business side of The Beatles so you definitely have to be an invested fan to read it, but if you are an invested fan (like myself) you will enjoy this because all the facts are there basically and it will just build onto your knowledge. I found it dragged on a bit towards the end and I was glad to finish it, but it did greatly add onto my Beatles knowledge so I'm definitely more prepared for a potential Mastermind session.

THE GREAT GATSBY - F. SCOTT FITZGERALD

★★★★★

The Great Gatsby is the story of a guy called Nick Carraway who has just moved to West Egg of Long Island to seek his fortune as a bond salesman. In East Egg lives Nick's cousin Daisy who's married to his college friend Tom. Nick travels there shortly after moving and he becomes acquainted with their friend Jordan Baker. Daisy, Tom and Jordan are all a lot more privileged than Nick is. When Nick returns home, he sees his neighbour Gatsby staring out at the water with his hand out. Nick later gets invited to one of Gatsby's famous parties, and he becomes friends with the mysterious Gatsby, and the story follows the tale of their friendship and essentially the mystery of Gatsby.

I actually started reading this book a few years ago but I didn't finish it, I remember it was during my GCSEs so I didn't finish it possibly due to stress, lack of time, an increase in the existential crisis, whatever reason, I didn't finish it. Since then I've seen the Leonardo DiCaprio film a few times as well as watching a television adaptation, so I knew the story and I gave it another go as it's pretty short and I feel a bit silly not having read it given how much I love reading and books and classic literature and all that jazz. I really liked this book, it's written in such a beautiful way and I think the social commentary on the seedy underbelly of Capitalism and class distinction was very interesting to read as this is a subject I already am quite interested in (the revolution is coming guys). It's really easy to get into and whilst it's beautifully written, it's not so complex that you can't understand what's going on.

BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S - TRUMAN CAPOTE

★★★

This story follows the tale of an unnamed narrator who meets a girl called Holly Golighty, she calls the narrator Fred after her older brother but that isn't actually his name. They're both tenants in apartments in Manhattan's Upper East Side. Holly is essentially a gold digger, she's unemployed and she spends her time with wealthy, elderly men in the hope that one of them will marry her. She likes to shock people by saying bizarre things, and as she slowly reveals herself to the narrator, he becomes interesting in her curious lifestyle.

In all honesty, this story didn't really thrill me. I liked the characterisation of Holly in the sense that she was so annoying and outrageous (and a little bit racist) that it was interesting to read about her, and the actual story was fairly interesting, but I didn't find it exciting to read, the writing style didn't enthral me and I'm not sure if I would read it again. I didn't enjoy the short stories that came with it either. I'm quite upset that I didn't really enjoy it that much because my parents quite like it, I'm hoping that I'll enjoy the film more when I watch it. I know it's very different from the book but I'm thinking I may prefer that (plus you can't go wrong with Audrey Hepburn)

HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY - DOUGLAS ADAMS

★★★★★

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy follows the story of a man called Arthur Dent who's taken off the Earth by his friend Ford Prefect. What Arthur didn't know is that he's actually a researcher for the revised edition of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and he's been posing as an out-of-work actor for 15 years. Together, they travel through space following the guidance of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and they meet a bunch of other travellers on their journey, including a couple of people he knew back on Earth and Marvin the paranoid android who's chronically depressed.

I've wanted to read this for a while because it's one of my Dad's favourite books (I'm pretty certain it was his first fandom ever with the radio show too and all that jazz) and I remember liking the film. I found the book took a few chapters to get going but once it got going, I couldn't put it down - I literally read about 90% of the book in a day. It's light sci-fi but if you're not into sci-fi I reckon you'll still find this pretty accessible, although I'm a big lover of sci-fi so I could be a little bit biased. I thought it was very humorous as well, and I loved Marvin just as much as I did in the film. He really reminded me of Morrissey and of myself which I loved. I definitely want to go on and read the sequels.

Why it's okay for people to be sad about Zayn Malik

I did film a video of me talking about this but I decided not to edit and upload it, partially because the lighting wasn't great and also because I wanted to ensure that my opinion wasn't just all over the place. As you will have definitely heard, as it's been all over Twitter and the major news channels, Zayn Malik has decided to leave One Direction. This isn't at all uncommon in pop bands, I mean you could trace this right back to The Beatles (all four members left at different points until deciding to split), Justin Timberlake left 'N Sync, Beyonce left Destiny's Child, Robbie Williams left Take That.. y'know it's not anything new. I just feel that some of the responses to Zayn Malik leaving is completely unreasonable.

Obviously, fans of One Direction are pretty upset but the majority of them do want the best for Zayn, and if that means him leaving the group, that's something they've accepted. I need to really emphasize that it's only a tiny tiny minority who are self-harming and committing suicide over Zayn leaving, obviously that's terrible and it shouldn't come to that, but I don't like how so many people are condemning an entire fandom made up of millions of people based on a few extremist fans.

Furthermore, I've heard far too many people comparing Zayn leaving to 150 people dying in a plane crash. Obviously it's terrible that people died in a plane crash, but is it fair to criticise fans of a pop group, most of whom are probably under the age of 18, for not solely talking about the plane crash? Don't get me wrong here, but people generally have the capacity to think about more than one thing at once so it's not like these kids have so much of a one track mind to the point where they can no longer care about 150 people dying. Y'know unless they're sadists and they enjoy hearing that people have died and are suffering, but funnily enough I don't think many sadists are into What Makes You Beautiful or Live While We're Young - but hey, I won't judge an entire population of sadists based on a small minority. Y'know why I won't do that? Because that's exactly what a bunch of the people criticising directioners are doing, and I know I'm better than that.

Continuing on from that point, maybe you don't feel any sort of connection to celebrities like musicians, writers, YouTubers and the sort, but these fans evidently do so that's why it's absolutely fine for them to be upset about a member leaving. These 150 people on the plane didn't have a connection to the fans of One Direction prior to the crash so whilst they'll obviously be sad about 150 deaths, they're probably going to have more to say on the issue of someone who they felt a genuine connection to. These mostly under-18 fans aren't going to have much to say on the issue of a plane crash besides from 'that's terrible, I hope their family are okay' whereas if you've grown up with a band and grown attached to the members and you know a lot about them, you're obviously going to have a lot more to say because to a certain degree, you know them.

On top of this, I think the reaction by many on Twitter stating that 'this isn't a big deal' and 'the fans are being irrational' is unfair and is evident of a complete lack of empathy. It may not be a big deal to you but just because something doesn't affect you doesn't in any way, shape or form give you the right to invalidate someone else's feelings. It doesn't take a lot to put yourself in someone else's shoes and imagine how you might feel if someone from your favourite band, who was possibly even your favourite member, has left and you may not see any new content from them again. If you can't empathise with them even a little bit, that makes you the worse person. Also, is it completely irrational? Zayn's clearly having some sort of mental issues at the moment, I don't want to assume what they might be, but he's clearly having a tough time and is it at all surprising? Since the formation of One Direction, Zayn has faced constant Islamaphobia and has been accused of plotting jihad, as well as being accused of being a bad Muslim and basically being criticised for not being like the other members of the group. This bullying is enough to make anyone ill, and the fact that he put up with it for so long shows a lot of courage, as well as the fact that he's now deciding to step down which is courageous because it's hard to tell yourself you need help and you need to stop allowing yourself to be treated that way.

In addition, as my lovely friend Antoinette said on Instagram, attacks on One Direction based on the fanbase being young girls is an attack on women and you're not giving them any sort of basic respect just because they don't listen to bands like the The Beatles, and whilst we're on that subject, The Beatles are my favourite band and I've done a hell of a lot of research on them, but you know what doesn't take a lot of research to figure out? The fact that The Beatles' fandom were young girls. I won't deny there were a lot of males listening to them, but come on you have no right to be so pretentious on the matter when the fandoms are actually very similar, they're just from different eras. In fact, I would say Beatlemaniacs were even crazier than Directioners - let's not forget that there was one Beatlemaniac who physically tried to mail herself to The Beatles. So whilst you're being pretentious and criticising a young girl for not listening to the same music you do, do a little bit of research so you can come to the realisation that their fandoms aren't so different.

One final point (I promise), I don't really agree with the idolisation of celebrities in general because they are people and I don't think that degree of obsession is healthy for the celebrity or the obsessor. I mean Zayn has said he's left the group to try and be a normal 22 year old, which is practically impossible when you're being idolised into perfection so you feel you can't make mistakes or do what other 22 year olds do. At the end of the day, you don't have to like One Direction, but you have to accept that there are people who do like them and they have a right to be sad about this - don't invalidate their feelings just because you lack the ability to empathise.

How are you feeling about Zayn leaving One Direction?

Rubber soul

Shirt - HMV
Skirt - Forever 21
Cardigan - Primark
Tights - Primark
Shoes (Dr Marten shoes, not pictured) - Office

As you may or may not have realised by now, The Beatles are my favourite band and have been since I was 11 (can you tell I was the coolest kid on the playground?) Rubber Soul was once my favourite album by The Beatles, it has been overtaken by A Hard Day's Night but I still think Rubber Soul is a top notch album and there's not a single song I don't like on there. Although, with the exception of Revolver and the White album, there isn't an album by The Beatles with songs I dislike*.

Are you a fan of The Beatles?

*Whilst The Beatles are arguably the greatest band to step foot on this world, songs like Yellow Submarine, Piggies and Rocky Raccoon are just not good songs. Given that The Beatles wrote so many iconic songs, we can just let this slide.

Ten things and ten blogs #2

one.
The 1st of February can only mean one thing - it's time to change the month on my calendar - y'know it's going to be a good year when you have a Beatles calendar.

Try and spot baby Bess.

two.
It was my Dad's birthday on the 2nd February, we had a nice quiet day in and watched 'the Buddy Holly story', it's not strictly historically accurate but I enjoyed it nonetheless (I do enjoy me a bit of Buddy Holly). It was also my Mum's birthday on the 5th February, unfortunately I had parent's evening on the same day but we managed to make it home with enough time to eat a meal and have some cake, and watch this show called 'the Tomorrow people' which is a show from from the 70s - full of bad acting and terrible special effects, but it was pretty funny because of that.

three.
My piano teacher passed an analogy onto me during my lesson, to put it into context I was finding it difficult to play triplet semiquaver chords in the tempo I had to play it in (bloody Oscar Peterson, he's brilliant, but he sure didn't think about incompetent grade 8 students when writing 'Hallelujah Time') so she said 'it's like running a race where both of your shoes are tied together, so you have to cut the laces [so cut out some of the notes in the chords], you've ruined a perfectly nice set of laces but at least then you can finish the race' which I thought was a good analogy for toxic relationships and is quite a relevant theme in my life at the moment, you may feel worse in the short term for cutting people off but at least then you can continue on with your life and move on, etcetera etcetera* (a bit cringe, but I enjoyed it nonetheless).
Whilst on the topic of my piano lessons, my grade 8 piano exam date has been confirmed - 18th March, so I have just about a month, which is crazy because ever since I started playing the piano at age 4 I always wanted to complete grade 8 and here I am potentially doing that, absolutely bizarre.

four.
I finished reading Howl's Moving Castle (which you can see a review of here) and it was so so good, now I really want to rewatch the film as it's one of my all-time faves.

five.
I think I've made it clear to you all that Harry Potter has a special place in my heart, but in case I hadn't made it clear enough, I did a Harry Potter tag on my YouTube channel (yes, you may not care about my favourite Harry Potter books and films, but there's an entire montage of creepy tweets I sent to Tom Felton in 2013 and a badly photoshopped picture of me with Tom Felton, so y'know y'all gotta check that out)

six.
Call me crazy if you wish (most people do) but I never played Pokemon as a child. I used to like the show but I was a Digimon girl at heart, but my parents gifted me Pokemon White for DS because I wanted it for Christmas and didn't get it for me so they gave it to me on their birthdays (me and my brother usually get one present on other people's birthday to avoid negative feelings) and I have been obsessed. I know I'm sort of a noob but I'm honestly loving it, my Oshawott evolved into a Dewott and I found it very emotional - I'm sure you'll understand.

seven.
Hank Green uploaded a video talking about the common fear of being forgotten which I think, especially if you're stuck in a permanent state of existential crisis and constantly wondering why we exist and what the point is if we're all going to be forgotten anyway like me, is a pretty good video to watch. It may be things you know already but it's nice to have a reminder, plus from Hank Green - it's sort of a double whammy y'know.

eight.
Y'know how I said in my last 'ten things and ten blogs' post that binge watching generation 1 of Skins in the space of a week was bad.. try binge watching generation 2, series 4, in the space of a couple of days - generation 2 is my favourite generation as well. I then went on to binge watch the whole of generation 3 in the space of a few days, my heart is so broken right now it may as well be non-existent.

nine.
Kanye West's video for Only One is one of the cutest things I have watched in a long time, I already liked the song (not just because it's Paul McCartney and Kanye West a.k.a modern deities) but the song's actually really sweet, I think North is one of the most adorable babies I've ever seen in my life, and that's probably one of the most generic things I've ever said in my life but I'm 'totes hipster' the rest of the time so it's okay.

ten.
I literally started cry laughing at this short clip of Wallace and Gromit. I haven't the faintest idea why I found it so funny, but I was in hysterics (so I recommend you watch it too, y'know if you want something to brighten up your day)

What I got for Christmas 2014

I received some really lovely bits for Christmas so I thought I would show you as that's what all the blogger/vlogger folks seem to be doing, plus they've been some of my favourite posts/videos for a long time!!

What did you do for Christmas?

18 things I learned by 18

1. Always bring your iPhone charger with you, where ever you're going. You never want to be in a situation where your battery is too low to listen to You're Gonna Lose That Girl or Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now for the thousandth time.

2. Never leave the house without a book. A bus journey without reading material is a bus journey not worth taking.

3. Don't forget that your journal is there for when you're feeling the bitter winds of teenage angst.

4. Saying 'I'm not a feminist, I believe in equality' is the most stupid thing a person can say. Embrace your feminism, educate the ignorant and don't stop complaining until things change.

5. Your parents were right about Morrissey and The Smiths. The years of denying yourself the pleasure of The Headmaster Ritual, There Is A Light That Never Goes Out, and How Soon Is Now? are years you will never get back, so face facts and accept that when it comes to music your parents know what they're talking about - it will save you a lot of time.

6. Don't be ashamed of still not being over High School Musical, anyone who doesn't like it is a dirty, rotten liar and they need to get their head in the game. Also don't be ashamed of the fact that you still watch Disney channel and get excited when they show Hannah Montana.

7. Foundation and concealer do not make you look cakey and orange if applied in the right shade and with the right amount, you can cover up those dark circles that you hate oh so much.

8. Biology A Level was never going to be your thing, you knew that from the first week of sixth form and just because you got a B at GCSE in a ridiculously hard Biology curriculum (Cambridge iGCSE is no joke people) it doesn't mean you're going to become an expert in phospholipid membranes and tertiary structures, so don't stress yourself out about it too much.

9. Try not to let your anxiety control you, say yes to more opportunities, but don't feel bad and beat yourself up if you're not up to meeting up with friends once in a while, it's all about baby steps.

10. Doctor Who is worth the hype. Give it another go, start from Christopher Eccleston - enjoy.

11. Don't upload photos of yourself on Facebook at least until age 15/16, seriously anything before then is not a pretty sight and by the time you discover this there will be hundreds to go through and make private or delete - save yourself this time.

12. You don't need to buy every Beatles band shirt you find, if you have nearly twenty, you have a problem and an empty purse.

13. As much as you want to date Tom Felton/Draco Malfoy (in the movies of course because Draco in the books is an arse wipe) you are not a Slytherin, as you find out at age 17, you are a gryffindor (and it's great - go go gryffindor!)

14. Answer your phone. Seriously. People know you're scared of picking up the phone, and they're generally sympathetic, which is why if they're calling you it is important - so pick up your damn phone once in a while.

15. Reading reader insert fanfictions probably isn't the best use of your time, but if it helps you forget about the inevitability of you being forever alone, go right ahead and do it.

16. That existential crisis you've been having since you were 12? Yeah, that's not going anywhere any time soon. Just try not to bum everyone else out by talking about the inevitability of death and the insignificance of humankind because it's not the greatest conversation starter.

17. One Direction are not that bad. Perhaps pop music is all manufactured and a disgrace to the greats like The Beatles, The Smiths, Ben Folds Five, Arctic Monkeys (and so on) but they are catchy and can be quite fun. However, you can maintain that pretentious façade and claim you only listen to 'I want' because it's written by Tom Fletcher and because it sounds exactly like a McFly song if it makes you feel better.

18. You don't need to have your entire life plan figured out by age 18. Very few people do, enjoy the next few years and get some life experience (preferably experience that doesn't require a wifi connection, yes Tumblr I'm looking at you)

What wisdom can you pass on from your life experience?
